NEXT MEETING ON PREPAREDNESS AND CERT INFO

This post contains:

• Summary of the last meeting,

• Plans for Sunday evening,Feb 22 meeting -- if you can attend on Feb 22 please let Nancy know: nm@montara.com

• information scheduled on CERT trainings.

Our meeting in January included:

Ashley Gray spoke about CERT (Community Emergency Response Training) and the need to have a "go-bag" with emergency and first-aid supplies with you at all times. There are two CERT trainings coming up in February and March. See fliers attached here. Once you are trained you will have a hard hat, vest, go-kit. You can use these skills and equipment for your own household and neighborhood, but will not be required to respond for the larger community. That would be your decision.

An overview given by Nick Guttuso of the San Mateo Office of Emergency Services (located in HMB) serving the coastside. Detailed information about OES is included in the handout which you can download at: https://www.hightail.com/download/UlRRTkZpOC9OQnptcXRVag

We heard from Hans Kuendig who build a shed to use as a shelter and as a storage space for emergency supplies. He build a 500 gallon storage tank for water and harvests rain water. Hans is an example of being very prepared and not everyone will go to these lengths, but each of us should have an emergency supply container near front door or outside our homes. You can consider a small pre-fab shed or locking plastic tub. Include spare eyeglasses, important documents, paper products, handi-wipes, flashlight with extra batteries, (see handout for further details).

Gary Warhaftig of the Montara/Moss Beach Water Improvement Association explained how everyone joined together to help the community purchase it's own water company and form the Montara Water and Sanitary District. His association will pay for mailing to all households whenever we are ready to do so.

We also heard from a representative of the Red Cross, Go Funai. The Red Cross depends upon volunteers and urges people to consider joining. They provide training to help people prepare, respond and recover. If we can, our community should have a number of people trained in "partner shelter management" which would enable us to assist running a shelter.

Nick explained that each community needs to have its own plan. He advised everyone to sign up for SMC alerts. You can do so here: https://www.smcalert.info/index.php?CCheck=1
At no cost you will receive alerts for emergencies, road closures, etc.  Nick's office depends upon a small staff and volunteers to assist in running an emergency operations center. The Red Cross and Fire Department will also be deployed to assist in running the emergency operations when needed. We are called Branch One (Montara, Moss Beach, El Granada and Pricneton harbor) and we need to set up block captains, know who has ham radios, who is CERT trained, where and how we will meet to evacuate as well as shelter.

We need our own local resources, beginning with each household being prepared with food, water and supplies. One resource is Campmor.com.  The Red Cross has a store as well. Or you can buy supplies at a store like Target. Lists of supplies are in the handout. Basically, you want one gallon of water per person, per day. You can use a small amount of bleach to keep water stable over long periods of storage, or you can use tablets, boil the water, use emergency filters, or a water stabilizer.

In the case of a tsunami we need to avoid clogging the highway with cars. The present system of signs is illogical and not useful. Instead, head for higher ground. Walk uphill away from the beach. In general we are not likely to have any tsunami flooding because most homes are high enough above sea level.

OUT NEXT MEETING:

SUNDAY evening, Feb 22nd at the Pt Montara Lighthouse.  At the start of this meeting, we will offer a half hour review of the basics covered in the last meeting and then at 7:30pm, will make information packets available and provide examples of preparedness kits. We will also be requesting folks to fill out information forms on what skills and resources you may be able offer, what special needs you may have, and/or list your emergency contacts, etc.. We will only request information you feel comfortable sharing.

If you attended the last meeting, please drop by between 7:30 and 8:30 for the aforementioned reasons. We hope that you and your neighbors will begin to develop relationships that would lead to local network between households and among neighborhoods. Please invite neighbors to join you for this meeting.

If you cannot attend, but would like to be part of the Preparedness Network among the households and businesses of Montara, Moss Beach, El Granada and Princeton Harbor, please send information to:
